Flying with medical cannabis: flights within Colombia and abroad

Compare domestic and international flights, supporting documents and destination requirements. Includes a care pathway for U.S. visitors.

Start with your route

There is no automatic yes. For a domestic flight, check the product, supporting documents and airline conditions. International travel adds the rules of the destination and every connection; a Colombian prescription does not replace those checks.

Visiting from the United States?

If you need care during your stay in Colombia, ask CAMED about availability, consultation language and a quote. Coordinating medical care is separate from transporting a product.

Traveling by plane with medical cannabis doesn't solve with a yes or a nonuniversal. A national flight includes the Colombian health and narcotics regulations, airport control and transport conditions. An international flight adds to the laws of the countries of destination and, if connected, those of the countries of transit.

What about a Colombian airport

Aerocivil recalls that billing and handheld luggage pass through safety filters from airlines and monitoring agencies, including airport police, anti-narcotics and fiscal and customs police. A medicinal product can be revised and therefore should be identified and consistent with the passenger's documents.

Decree 811 of 2021 regulates the production and commercialization of compounded preparations and finished cannabis products. For the traveller, this means that an anonymous oil, a flower bag with no sign or an informally bought product doesn't get traceability just because it's transport with a medical prescription.

For a national flight: prepare a small file

  • Identification document of the travelling patient.
  • Current and legible prescription matching product, concentration, pharmaceutical form, dose and duration.
  • dispensing package or original package with sign, concentration, lot and available data from establishment or manufacturer.
  • Input or proof that helps to prove provenance.
  • Quantity proportional to the duration of the journey and to the posology, without re-packaging or mixing products.
  • The carrier's prior and written confirmation of its luggage, fluids and medicines, as far as possible.

The public regulations consulted do not create an "airport attestation of medicinal cannabis" general for national flights. A doctor's medical statement can complement the prescription but does not replace the regulated product, sign and provenance. If an airline requests a form of its own, that document also does not replace the legal requirements.

Hand or cellar?

No identical response exists for all presentations. Check the airline's conditions for medicines, fluids, devices and batteries. Hand luggage usually allows to preserve documents and avoid extreme temperatures but the safety filter may require monitoring. If treatment uses a vaporizer or other battery device, the aeronautical rules for batteries and devices apply separately.

  • Do not hide the product among other objects or remove its label.
  • Do not give them to an escort to avoid questions: prescription, passenger and product have to be consistent.
  • Do not consume them on board unless there is a clinical need, be consistent with the airline's rules and the track does not affect third parties and check this before the flight.
  • It arrives with sufficient time for an inspection and keeps a digital copy of your support.

On international flights, change the authority that decides

A valid prescription in Colombia does not require the country of destination to accept cannabis, CBD, THC, compounded preparations or flower. Some countries treat CBD as a controlled substance at their concentration, while others prohibit all forms of cannabis and some require prior authorisation. A scale may also involve entry or customs monitoring under the law of the connecting country.

Resolution 1478 of 2006 regulates international transport of controlled medicines for personal use. It lays down as a maximum reference a 30-day standard treatment, requires copies of the prescription for patients entering Colombia and provides that the National Narcotics Fund may issue a certification if an additional requirement is required by another country, based on a summary of clinical history issued by the IPS or the treating doctor.

International step by step monitoring

  1. 1Consultation with the embassy, consulate or health and customs authority of the country of destination using the exact name of the product, cannabinoids, concentration, pharmaceutical form and quantity.
  2. 2Repeat the consultation for each connecting country and do not assume that remaining in transit removes its controls.
  3. 3He asked if they required prior permission, translation, an office, a certificate from the National Narcotics Fund or a dedicated format.
  4. 4He confirms his luggage rules with his airline and submits his permission before his travel.
  5. 5If you do not get a clear official response or the product is prohibited, do not transport them. Talk to your doctor earlier about a secure alternative therapeutic plan.

Flower, artisan oils and products without sign

Decree 1138 of 2025 incorporated a regulatory path for cannabis as a finished product for medical purposes. The existence of that category does not automatically legalise the grown, bought or packed flower outside the authorized chain. At airports and boundaries with several authorities involved, the lack of sign and provenance may be particularly important.

The same care applies to artisan oils or products that only say "CBD" without verifiable composition. The Invima explain that products under their categories require appropriate health authorisation while compounded preparations follow a special course of production and dispensing. The commercial name or a declaration of the seller does not replace that monitoring.

Fast decision before travelling

  • National flight + regulated product and consistent document: confirms airline requirements and get ready for inspection.
  • International flight: get official confirmation of destination and each connection before using them.
  • Flor or product without traceability: Do not assume that a prescription resolves the risk and seek specific legal and health guidance.
  • For large quantities or more than thirty days of treatment on an international trip, consult the Fondo Nacional de Estupefacientes and the destination authority in advance.
  • Unsolved dispute about the day of flight: Do not improvise or hide the product and agree an alternative with the treating professional.
