Short answer
Colombia has a medical-cannabis framework, but a Colombian prescription is not permission to carry marijuana through a U.S. airport or across an international border. For many U.S. visitors, the safer pathway is to prepare the case before travel and coordinate lawful clinical care and dispensing in Colombia instead of transporting a product from the United States.
The rule people miss
State medical-marijuana status does not replace U.S. federal travel rules
TSA states that marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products remain illegal under federal law, apart from limited hemp or FDA-approved exceptions. The U.S. Department of State also warns travellers to verify destination rules because medicines legal in the United States can still lead to detention abroad.
Do not arrive at the airport relying only on a state medical card. Confirm the exact product with the relevant U.S. authority, the Colombian authority and every transit country. Do not plan to return to the United States with a Colombian cannabis product without express official confirmation.

Start with product-level facts
Record the generic name, cannabinoid content, dosage form, strength and amount. Legal treatment can differ between an FDA-approved medicine, a hemp-derived product and marijuana under federal law.
Apply Colombia's 30-day traveller rule
Article 83 of Resolution 1478 of 2006 limits controlled medicine carried for personal treatment to a standard 30-day supply and requires an incoming patient to carry a copy of the prescription.
Separate border paperwork from clinical care
A travel document does not create a medical indication. A Colombian clinician must independently assess the case; a prescription is issued only when clinically appropriate.
Plan the return before the outbound flight
The rules of the departure country, every transit country, Colombia and the country of return must all be checked. A Colombian prescription does not automatically authorise entry elsewhere.

Can my U.S. medical-marijuana card authorise international travel?+
No. A state card does not override federal aviation, export, transit or Colombian entry rules. Product classification and every jurisdiction on the itinerary matter.
Can CAMED issue a border permit?+
No. CAMED coordinates medical and administrative orientation in Colombia. It is not a customs, immigration or narcotics authority and cannot guarantee admission of any product.
Can I prepare before I arrive in Colombia?+
Yes. CAMED can collect non-clinical travel context, explain the Colombian pathway and organise next steps before travel. The timing and jurisdiction of any medical consultation must be confirmed for the individual case.
Should I take a Colombian product back to the United States?+
Do not assume that you can. CBP explains that foreign prescriptions and controlled substances face U.S. import restrictions, with marijuana specifically outside the ordinary controlled-medicine allowance described in its traveller guidance.
