Canada to Colombia · pre-travel guide
Medical cannabis in Colombia for Canadian travellers
A lawful planning guide for Canadian visitors who need medical-cannabis care during a trip to Colombia.
CAMED coordinates orientation and medical evaluation in Colombia. It does not issue border permits, sell cannabis or guarantee a prescription.

Route scope
Canadian travellers preparing lawful care for a temporary stay in Colombia.
Short answer
Do not carry cannabis across the Canadian border. The Government of Canada states that taking cannabis across the border is illegal even for medical use. Canadian travellers can instead prepare a Colombian care pathway and, where clinically appropriate, obtain treatment through lawful Colombian channels during the visit.
The rule people miss
Canada's rule is direct: do not take cannabis across the border
Health Canada states that carrying cannabis across Canada's border is illegal, including cannabis used for medical purposes. Government travel guidance also says that a medical prescription does not itself authorise crossing the border with cannabis.
Leave Canadian cannabis products in Canada. Prepare relevant medical information for a Colombian clinician and plan any lawful Colombian dispensing without assuming that a Colombian product may be brought back into Canada.
Before you fly
One itinerary. Four legal checks.
The answer depends on the exact medicine, quantity, departure country, connections, Colombia and the return journey.
Plan for care in Colombia, not export from Canada
Because Canada prohibits taking cannabis across its international border, organise continuity of care without packing cannabis, oils or CBD products for the flight.
Prepare a concise clinical summary
Bring a list of current medicines, prior treatment, relevant diagnoses and adverse reactions for the clinician. Do not send unnecessary sensitive information through marketing forms.
Separate border paperwork from clinical care
A travel document does not create a medical indication. A Colombian clinician must independently assess the case; a prescription is issued only when clinically appropriate.
Plan the return before the outbound flight
The rules of the departure country, every transit country, Colombia and the country of return must all be checked. A Colombian prescription does not automatically authorise entry elsewhere.

Experience, stated carefully
We have supported travellers from the United States and the United Kingdom.
CAMED has helped people from both countries prepare their Colombian care pathway before a visit. We do not publish personal details, present an individual outcome as a legal precedent or claim that anyone’s product was authorised at a border.
Clarify the itinerary and the traveller's actual question
Distinguish carrying medicine from accessing care in Colombia
Prepare the case for an independent medical assessment
Leave customs and licensing decisions to the competent authority
Document checklist
Bring facts, not assumptions.
The exact product and route matter more than the label “medical cannabis”.
- Complete itinerary and dates in Colombia
- Generic list of current medicines and doses
- Relevant clinician letter or medical summary
- No Canadian cannabis product in luggage or carry-on
- Plan for authorised Colombian dispensing only if prescribed
- Return-country confirmation before carrying any Colombian product
Questions before departure
What this pathway can and cannot do.
Can I leave Canada with medical cannabis if I have a prescription?+
Government of Canada guidance says no: cannabis cannot be taken across the Canadian border, including for medical use, without the exceptional authorisation it describes for regulated import or export.
Does this mean I cannot receive medical care in Colombia?+
No. It means cross-border transport is different from lawful care after arrival. CAMED can help organise the Colombian pathway, subject to clinical assessment.
Can I bring Colombian cannabis back to Canada?+
Do not assume so. Canada's border prohibition applies when entering or leaving. Confirm exceptional authorisation directly with the relevant Canadian authority before travelling with any product.
Will CAMED sell me cannabis?+
No. CAMED coordinates orientation and medical evaluation. It does not cultivate, manufacture or sell cannabis, and it does not guarantee a prescription.
